Gounki

Gounki online is a place where you can play Gounki for free on the Internet with human or bot players.

How to play online
1 - Registration
Registration for playing online can be reached from the login page, or directly here. We shall not divulgate your personal data to any third party because we neither, we don't like spam. We use those data to make up an idea of gounki players on the Internet.

Once they filled in the registration form, our visitors receive a confirmation e-mail at the email address they provided. The registration is made complete when the visitor clicks on the confirmation link in that e-mail. No more than one account may be created for a given email address.

Informations visible on our web site are the last and first name, the country, the quotation of the player, as well a his ranking and an history of his games. Players wishing to have a picture on their resume are invited to send us their photo by email.

2 - Login
Here it is, you've got an account ! Go now to the login page, fill in your login and password and click OK. Unregistered players are also welcome through the ghost entrance for watching others' games, but they may not attend those games. From the login page, a checkbox also give the possibility to change your password or quotation. Should you need to change some other information, please send us an email.

One click login is the possibility to have a direct identified access to your game list from your bookmarks: provide your login and password, then click on "Bookmark-friendly access". You'll then be connected on your games list with an identification string within the page's URL (password is encrypted). This means that if you bookmark this address, you may access your games list without providing your login and password each time. Remember to update that bookmark if your password is changed

3 - Game start
You logged in and are are now on the games list page, where you can see :

  • Your own games if you have some running games,
  • Games proposed by other players,
  • Other running games
  • A button allowing you to propose a game if you don't already have a running proposal.
Players who are to play next have their name in bold in the games list. If your name is in bold, then it is also in green letters, so that you notice it at first glance.

To start a game, you may click on a game proposed by another player, and/or propose for a game yourself. Please, keep in mind that except for bots, players proposing a game are probably not connected and there could be some time before they play their next move.

You may click on a game between other players in the list if you'd like to see how it's going. Use the buttons at the upper right of the board to replay those games. Games played on Gounki online can be seen from the archives, from the Solo page if you know the game number, or by clicking on the R facing most games in players resumes.

4 - The game
The game interface has been designed for turn by turn game, which means players play their moves when they pay a visit to the site and their opponents may answer five minutes or five days later. Nevertheless, if a player doesn't move for 60 days, gounki online administrators may resign his game and update the rating list. To play at your turn, select a piece, then click on its destination(s). The interface highlights possible clicks with white squares during rollover. When it needs more click to determine the move, it waits for a confirmation click on the case. For instance, may a player move a double square one case forward, the interface needs a second click on the destination to make sure it was not the first stage of a deployment. Don't hesitate to practice the game interface by yourself on the solo page before you start an "official game".

The Javascript and dhtml game interface does not automatically detect your opponent moves. That's why a reload button appears below the board when it's your opponent's turn to play. Of low use against human players, that button becomes mandatory if you wish to play real time games against permanently connected robots. For instance, when the Mgounki program plays at level 4 on Gounki online with the name "Ham Mgounki", it needs an average 20 to 30 secondes thinking time on each move (response time may increase in case of simultaneous games).

Players ranking
As soon as a game is over, players ranks and resumes are automatically updated. The rating list also includes some games that weren't played on the Internet.

Players ranking on Gounki online isn't very official because it's easy to get some help during online games. But being the only existing gounki ranking, system, it is used as a reference to evaluate players' strength. This is the main reason why players registering on Gounki online are invited to use their real name. Nevertheless, being anonymous has its own virtues and we perfectly accept nicknames on Gounki online.

Play as a guest
Unregistered players have the possibility to play friendly games against the computer from the home page. Game numbers are stores in cookies, which enable guest players to restart their guest games even if they leave the site during their match. Friendly games do not affect the Computer's ranking and are not mentioned in its resume, but they can be seen from the Guest player's Resume if you click on his portrait just right of the game board.

And Now...
It's your turn to play !
